Nubia Morales is someone who I have seen excel in the hair industry and is someone I truly admire. I have been getting my hair done with her since 2014, when she was renting a small space and watched her grow and expand into her own salon. I am truly in awe with her accomplishments and the amount of guts it took to be her own #GirlBoss. To me, nothing is more inspiring than Latinas who try and raise the bar and pave the way for their peers and for those who come after them.

How long have you been in the hair industry? And was there a defining moment where you knew this was what you were meant to do?
I can’t even believe it myself, but next year will be my 10th year in the beauty industry. I’ve always loved anything beauty, but hair was just my thing. I loved everything about hair as soon as I started school. It’s just the cherry on top of a great look! I’ve always had that burning passion for it but THE moment I knew this was my calling was when I was 20 years old in college studying to be an elementary school teacher. I rode the train to downtown everyday and an older woman asked me what I was going to school for. When I told her, she asked me if that’s what made me happy at the time and I had to think about it. Frankly, all I wanted to do is work at a salon and because of that lady I turned some things around in my life. I wasn’t happy at all while in school and I dropped out soon after. Even though it was tough to break the news to my parents they supported my decision 100% #Blessed.
How has being raised as a Latina affected the way you do business?
In all honesty, being a young Latina with a business is definitely something I never saw in my future. As an immigrant of Mexico, I’ve been affected by my status countless times in the past mostly because I didn’t have the same privileges as American citizens. All of my struggles have been because I was for a long time an illegal immigrant which I’m not ashamed to admit, but also a young Latina business owner.
What is your proudest moment as an entrepreneur?
My proudest moment as an entrepreneur was bringing my parents to see my salon for the first time. We come from poverty and we never had much growing up in Mexico. My parents both work hard jobs. My mom is a house keeper at a hotel and my dad is a welder and mostly works doing small side jobs for people. So to me, showing my family that all their struggles were worth it was by far the most rewarding feeling. ?*I’m officially crying.
What advice would you give to yourself at 16?
If I could be 16 again and could give myself advice based on everything I know now, I would definitely tell myself to not be so hard on myself for making mistakes.
Who is your woman crush? Or is there someone you admire?
My woman crush is definitely my mother. She had gone through so much in her life. And through everything she has been an amazing mother to 4 kids and an amazing wife to my dad. She doesn’t take things personal and always acts on kindness even when people don’t deserve it. She’s my hero!
Describe yourself in three words:
Comical, Determined, Dependable
What are some goals you have for the future?
My goals are more personal these days. I in the near future want to start a family with my amazing husband. And although (Yikes) I’m scared out of my mind I’m just as excited. And definitely give myself more free time because I work 6 days a week or sometimes 7. Nubia needs a vacay!
And last thing: what are your views on Trump? Just Kidding, we won’t go there (LOL)!
If you must know I hate his guts jajaja (laughs in Spanish)
